What Autumn does to our skin

As autumn rolls in, bringing cooler temperatures and crisp air the transition from the warm, humid days of summer to the dry, chilly weather of autumn affects our skin in several ways, leading to dryness, irritation, and a duller complexion if left unchecked. Understanding what the colder autumn weather does to our skin helps us in taking proactive steps to maintain a healthy, radiant glow throughout the season.

What Happens to Our Skin in Autumn?

When temperatures drop, the air holds less moisture, creating a drier environment. This lack of humidity means that moisture evaporates more quickly from the skin, leaving it feeling tight, dry, and sometimes flaky. Also, the effect of switching from cold outdoor air to indoor heating can further dehydrate the skin.

During autumn, the skin’s natural barrier function is also compromised. The skin's outermost layer is designed to retain moisture and protect against environmental aggressors. But, colder weather weakens this barrier, making it more susceptible to irritation, redness, and sensitivity. This can worsen existing skin conditions like eczema or rosacea and even accelerate the development of fine lines and wrinkles as skin loses its plumpness due to dehydration.

So, what can we do about it? Autumn skincare routines

As the weather changes, so should your skincare routine. In the summer months, lighter, gel-based moisturizers can help to maintain hydration. However, autumn requires a switch to more nourishing products.

  1. Try a Richer Moisturizer: Look for products containing hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin. These ingredients help lock in moisture and support the skin's barrier function. Cream-based moisturizers provide more protection than lightweight lotions.

  2. Exfoliate Gently: Dead skin cells accumulate more quickly on dry skin, leading to a dull complexion. Gentle exfoliation, 1-2 times a week, helps to remove these dead cells and promotes the absorption of other skincare products like serums and moisturizers.

  3. Hydrate from Within: Drinking plenty of water and incorporating hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables into your diet can help support your skin from the inside out.

  4. Protect Your Skin: Even though it's cooler, UV rays can still cause damage. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential year-round to protect your skin from premature aging and hyperpigmentation.

  5. Treat Yourself to a Facial: Professional treatments are an excellent way to give your skin extra care during the seasonal transition and get advice specific to your skin type.
